Acoustichris

biography

Played music all my life, purely amateur. I gave up on electric guitar some years ago, I really wasn't good enough. I play acoustic 6 & 12 string guitars, sing, and have written a few songs and instrumentals.
Married, one kid, work with computers for a living.

Large format condenser mics

September 11th, 2006 + 10:09 PM  ·  Acoustichris

I have a couple of nice dynamic mics that are great for performance, now I'm thinking about a recording mic for my mini studio. Again, price is a critical issue, but so is sound quality. The mic will be used for 1) my voice 2) my daughter's voice 3) my 6- and 12-string guitars and 4) my daughter's 29-string harp. It will be primarily used with my Boss BR-900CD recorder. Price range: probably around $250-$350. I am unimpressed with MXL mics, and like Rode, SE, Shure, and Sennheiser mics. I would prefer a multi-pattern, as I believe that will give me a larger range of sounds.

Mixer opinions?

September 10th, 2006 + 7:09 PM  ·  Acoustichris

I have been looking for a reasonably portable, inexpensive mixer that has at least 4 XLR inputs, 6 would be better; decent mic preamps, standard set of effects; that would hold up well to lightweight use. Yamaha makes a nice one at a reasonable price.
Behringer, whom I usually avoid, has come out with a new mixer that looks pretty interesting. Along with the 6 XLRs, it uses their new XENYX preamps, and also has USB out. That would be a great setup for me, but I would like to hear some reports from people that have actually used this mixer. The model is XENYX 1222FX and is fairly new on the market. I am well aware of Behringer's poor reputation, but I am willing to give them a chance if people I trust (YOU FOLKS! ) aren't too negative. If it is yet another piece of B junk, so be it.
Thanks for any input!

Fairy Dance

September 10th, 2006 + 1:09 PM  ·  Acoustichris

Wrote this one last night. My daughter liked it.

Fairy Dance

Come my lads and sit a while beneath the glowing moon
And if you’re sitting still enough, you’ll hear a mournful tune
’Twas in this place some years ago, a lady and her man
Who felt a witching power, and beheld a fairy band

They marched out from yon grove of trees, with faces long and glum
And played an ancient tune upon their whistles and their drums
The sound it billowed louder then, and grew upon the breeze
With tiny wisps of tule fog encircling the trees

The two were frozen in their place, they could not move at all
And as they watched, the grove of trees became a misty hall
The band marched on and played their tune, and paid them ne’er a glance
But their feet they started twitching as if they longed to dance

Chorus
And the band circled round
And the piper called the tune
While the couple danced without a sound
It ended all too soon

They told no one what they had seen; nor where they thought they’d gone
For they knew no one would understand the power of that song
Instead they slipped away one night, when the moon was full and round
And they went off a-looking for that magic fairy sound

But no one’s ever seen them since, they disappeared that night
And all that people knew was that something wasn’t right
For if they sit alone at night when the moon is full and round
They start to think they might have heard a mournful fairy sound

[Chorus]

What in the World

April 12th, 2006 + 1:04 AM  ·  Acoustichris

OK, here are the lyrics to one of my more recent songs. Yep, a love song written for my wife. She deserves better, but this is what I've got. Let me know what you think.

What in the World

Verse
What in the world would I do without you by my side, right where you belong
What would I do if I reached for your love and all that I reached for was gone
I’d try to be strong and keep moving along but I think I would just want to hide
I’d wave and I’d smile and I’d stay for a while but there would be nothing inside

Verse
All I could ask is to have you to hold in my arms, in my dreams, in my life
All I could want is to know that you want to stay here, be my woman my wife
I’ll love you through time and I’ll know that you’re mine, and you’ll always be first in my heart
You’ll know that I love you and put no one above you, and nothing could tear us apart.

Bridge
This is the way that I feel and I know that true love will not fade away
I’ll keep you beside me, and hold you inside me, and we’ll take it day by day

Verse
What in the world would I do without you by my side, right where you belong
What would I do if I reached for your love and all that I reached for was gone
I’d try to be strong and keep moving along but I think I would just want to hide
I’d wave and I’d smile and I’d stay for a while but there would be nothing inside
